WESTON—This past weekend, the Village of Weston buzzed with activity as residents gathered for two major philanthropic and community-building events. With perfect spring weather as a backdrop, the village demonstrated the strength of its local traditions and volunteer networks.

Weston Township Fire Department Hosts Annual Easter Egg Hunt

On Saturday, the Weston Township Fire Department held its annual Easter Egg Hunt, a tradition they have maintained for nearly a decade. The department famously stepped in to steward the event following the closure of the Weston American Legion, ensuring this seasonal staple remained a fixture for village families.

  • Atmosphere: Sunny skies and high attendance from the local community.
  • The Hunt: Over 2,000 eggs were prepared for children in age groups ranging from 1 to 10.
  • Prizes: The event featured 104 sponsored prize baskets, donated by local supporters and businesses.

Bikes for Tikes: Riding for a Cause

Philanthropy was in motion as the Bikes for Tikes group passed through the village. An offshoot of the long-standing BGSU Ziggython (Dance Marathon) efforts, this initiative has been active since 2000.

  • The Ride: Cyclists completed a 72-mile journey, a distance representing the 72 patients admitted to a Children’s Nationwide Hospital every single minute.
  • Community Support: The Weston United Methodist Church provided a lunch break for the riders. Participants traveled from Wood, Fulton, Lucas, Williams, Lorain, and Cuyahoga counties.
  • Impact: The ride continues a 30-year legacy of regional support for pediatric healthcare.

Play Ball: Weston Youth Sports

As April approaches, the focus of the community shifts toward the local ball diamonds. This season marks a significant milestone for the organization behind the village's youth athletics.

The Evolution of the Weston Sports Initiative Association (WSIA)

The Weston Sports Initiative Association was established in late 2023 as an offshoot of the Village’s Parks and Recreation Department. Building on the foundation of the village's long-standing sports history, the association saw highly successful seasons in 2024 and 2025.

As part of an intentional and planned transition, the WSIA is now operating as a fully independent organization. This move is designed to bolster the program's future, allowing the board—a dedicated group of local volunteers—to focus exclusively on the long-term growth and sustainability of youth baseball, softball, and T-ball in Weston.

Upcoming Season Details:

  • Practices: Following the historical schedule, practices are set to begin in early April.
  • Schedules: League and practice schedules are currently being finalized. The WSIA board will post these to official community channels and distribute them to parents as soon as they are available.
  • Vision: The transition to an independent board ensures that the management of the program remains in the hands of the community members and parents most invested in the youth sports experience.
