WESTON—The Historical Society of Weston, Ohio welcomed visitors to the train depot at the Wood County Fair from Aug. 4 to 7, inviting fairgoers to stop in, look around and leave with a punched ticket. The Society later called its Depot Day during the fair’s Senior Day a success.
At the Fair
In posts on its Facebook page, the Society invited the public to visit it at the depot on Tuesday, Aug. 4, when volunteers were on hand until 2 p.m., and again beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. On Friday, Aug. 7, the group posted that it would be at the depot until late that night and encouraged people to come by for a punched ticket.
According to the Society’s Aug. 27 meeting minutes, volunteers who staffed the building during the fair included Bob Ackerman, Darlene Beggs, Robin Kaiser, Brittney Klockowski, Dean Babcock, Jeremy Schroeder, Ollie Schroeder and a volunteer listed as Garrett.
Months of Preparation
The exhibit had been in the works since spring. At the Society’s May 28 meeting, its Train Depot committee laid out plans to get the building ready for the fair, including cleaning, setting up a model train and preparing punch tickets for visitors.
Bringing the Depot Home
The fair appearance also drew questions about the depot’s future. When the Cygnet, Ohio History page asked on Facebook whether the depot would be returning to Weston soon, the Society replied that moving it is a long-term project the group is working toward, with many steps along the way that need to be considered. The Society has not announced a timeline.
Get Involved
The Society holds monthly membership meetings in the meeting room of the Weston Public Library, using the rear entrance, and invites anyone interested in the village’s history, their family roots or the story of their home to attend. Its summer calendar included a June 25 presentation of Black Swamp stories by Mike McMaster, education coordinator at the Wood County Museum, hosted by the library.
