GRAND RAPIDS—Weston Public Library is running about $8,000 short each month while it waits for levy money and absorbs a reduction in state library funding, Fiscal Officer Deb Gross told the library's Board of Trustees at its Sept. 14 meeting, according to the minutes posted Oct. 13.

Waiting on Levy Money

According to the minutes, Gross reported that the Auditor had not yet provided the library's levy money and that she was "waiting on a response from the Auditor's Office but expects the money soon." The minutes say the shortage of "~$8000 each month" comes from that missing levy money and a reduction in the PLF, the state Public Library Fund. When the levy money arrives, it will go into the library's market account to replenish funds.

The board voted to table Resolution 2026-1 and the resolution accepting the county's amounts and rates until its November meeting.

Renovation on Hold

Director Shelen Stevens said she was not comfortable moving forward with Library Design's renovation proposal because of its high cost estimate. She recommended waiting until the library's strategic plan, being developed with the State Library of Ohio, is final before changing either building. The board took no vote.

Other Business

  • Cardio drumming: A patron asked about holding a cardio drumming program in the community room. Stevens said legal and insurance advisers recommended against it because of liability, and the program was not approved. Trustees suggested other venues.
  • Maker Space policy: The board adopted a Maker Space policy.
  • Programs: Stevens reported growing Teen Time attendance, homeschool programs starting at the Grand Rapids branch in October, and Halloween activities at both branches on Oct. 31.

All votes were 5–0, with trustees Dan Sheperd (president), Armitage, Gamby, Patel and Sommerfeld present and Archambo and Carson absent, according to the minutes. The meeting was held at the Grand Rapids branch.

Background

The library is also seeking applicants for an open seat on its board (Sept. 25 coverage).
